The sundering darkness at the heart of the Underworld, Diabolus Hellbringer has existed for so long that most monsters have forgotten him entirely. Barbatos Rex is far more emblematic of the Underworld, and most monsters would agree he’s clearly the only leader. But Underworld Dwellers still revere their mighty Ancestor as a god, raising blood-drenched claws in supplication at every unholy altar dedicated to him, although most believe he’s no longer physically around.

Where Barbatos is the elegant face of evil, Diabolus is its raging-hot heart. His anger is so powerful that the only way to stop him from incinerating the Underworld itself was to trap him in a shimmering ring of ice. However, it’s never been clear who was responsible for that move—a historical point that the Underworld Dwellers and Celestial Paradise have argued over for years. Barbatos Rex will tell anyone that not only was it his idea alone, but that Diabolus agreed to it for the good of the Underworld. He’ll also swear that Diabolus granted him the ultimate authority over Evil, thereby automatically supporting his every decision. 

Since Diabolus refuses to see any monster besides Barbatos, there’s no way to confirm whether any of this is true (or if Barbatos Rex really did successfully launch a coup against the ultimate evil in the universe), and few monsters are willing to discuss such a sensitive topic. The Chronicler will ultimately have to decide how much of the Underworld’s alleged origin really belongs in the history books.
