There are many monsters like Dosigumi. In fact, there are legions. The oceans of Petra are filled with the souls of drowned monsters, which rise angrily during storms and attack any ships unfortunate enough to be caught in the tempest. It’s said that the sight of so many hungry phantoms is so terrifying that some monsters go mad and leap into the waters themselves, joining the wave of sorrowful spirits in their eternal throes of malice.

Who was Dosigumi before she died? A warrior, a scholar, a mother, a philosopher? No one will ever know. All that remains of her previous existence is her long, oily black hair, which streams with saltwater more acidic than tears. Whatever happened in life to make her ache for blood after death must have been tormentous.
