Pypholius is not a monster—at least, not in the traditional sense. It was once part of a greater entity named Phypholosseum, an interconnected web of phytoplankton stretching across Petra’s vast oceans. But due to magic runoff from the land, the plankton mutated into enormous versions of themselves and began to occupy an entirely different ecological niche.

After the mutation event, Pypholius and its many siblings were literally set adrift, hungry in ways they’d never been before and devouring much larger (and often sentient) prey. This was clearly a problem, but it wasn’t as if the magically transformed plankton meant to do anything wrong—they’d just never had to eat this much before. They also didn’t have the mental capacity to determine between a tasty shark and a friendly monster, so they devoured everything. It was becoming a problem.

Luckily, thanks to Queen Thalassa’s Pypholius Beautification Project, thousands of these floating stomachs have been safely brought to the ocean floor and used as landscaping plants. Thalassa even put in a whole garden of Pypholius at her palace!

But what Thalassa hasn’t had her Minister of Propaganda advertise is that this Pypholius garden isn’t just a pretty arrangement of constantly snacking sea plants. It’s right outside her bedroom window, meaning that any monster who might try to sneak in and attack her unawares would be gobbled up by the Pypholius before they even touched the window sash. Sustainable security measures that also solve a huge ecological disaster? Now that’s leadership.
